What official records may not show

- A boil-water advisory or emergency notice issued directly by a utility (these are typically posted on the utility's own site, not in the federal datasets this site aggregates)
- Very recent events — federal datasets can lag weeks to months behind current local conditions
- Conditions at an individual household tap, private well, or point-of-use — utility records reflect official monitoring points
- A contaminant that was never required to be monitored, or that simply hasn't been added to the database yet
How to find your utility or city record
- 1Search by address, city, or utility name to find the specific public water system (PWSID) that serves your area.
- 2Check the PFAS/UCMR 5 sampling section — note whether any analyte was detected above the minimum reporting level, and whether that analyte has a finalized EPA limit.
- 3Check the violation history — note whether records are marked health-based (a legal limit or treatment technique was violated) or monitoring/reporting (a testing or reporting deadline was missed).
- 4If no records appear, read "What a missing record means" before assuming a contaminant is absent — it may reflect a reporting lag, not a finding of no contamination.
- 5For current, on-the-ground status — not just federal record history — contact your utility, state drinking water agency, or local health department directly.
